Search Engine Marketing - Is Content Really King?

Whether you're a beginner or seasoned pro, getting your site to rank well can be a trying experience. No matter how great the challenges associated with ranking well in the search engines, it's something that every internet marketer must come to grips with.

Make no mistake, Page Rank (PR) is always significant. PR is Google's measure of authority and authority is something like the number of times other sites reference yours. Good PR pretty much ensures you good search engine positioning. I'm not saying that Page Rank is not good, I'm just saying that it should not be the only thing you focus on. Given that Page Rank is totally controlled by Google, internet marketers seem to be spending more and more time chasing Big G. It's not much different than a dog chasing it's own tail - the poor creature never seems to catch it and everyone watching knows it before the dog does. Page Rank is little more than Google's concept of how relative your site is: Not how much your site is worth.



Decent rankings rarely come from a half-hearted attempt at search engine optimization. The process typically can be a little hit and miss before you begin to see what works for your primary niche. Number one on your list of things to do is simple: Your site needs to turn traffic into action. Even if you spent a fortune on web development and design, that doesn't mean your site will convert your traffic. Here's where the rubber meets the road: Having a visitor who has found your site via search to take action is Search Engine Marketing. First and foremost, your site design, navigation and content strategy must be based on keywords and keyphrases. Pairing your keywords as anchor text will pretty much ensure that you've got an efficient link building campaign off the ground. Keywords or phrases that don't speak to your market and you're dead. Ineffective anchor text and you may as well be dead!


Your link building efforts will result in traffic and traffic means we can start testing. And testing means we're right back where we started - with conversions! The most fun you can have online is converting your visitors so don't be afraid of digging in and getting your virtual hands dirty!
