Lanyards are incredibly useful little accessories and can be used for many different reasons. They are usually made out of pieces of wire, rope, or certain cloth and are designed to hold or attach to an object. A majority of the time they are used to secure items such as a key, id card, glasses, bottle opener, knife, compass, or work badge. You can wear a lanyard just about anywhere but usually you wear it around your arm, waist, neck or wrist. If you wear it around your wrist it it is conveniently called a "wristlet," and it is essentially a bracelet with a holder built in.
There are a lot of different styles of lanyards available. You can customize a lanyard pretty much any way that you want. Some people use a shoelace cord, while others use strung wire. Some even go as far as to make their lanyard a piece of jewelry with crystals and diamonds on it. If you wanted to get really creative you could weave a lanyard out of cloth or have it custom printed with words or pictures of your choosing. Lanyards are a great way to express yourself and let people know a little bit about you.
Lanyards are used in many different ways but one typical way to use it is to put it around the neck so that it hangs down in front of the chest and displays the object that is hanging from it. This is great for employees that have an identification card or need a place to put keys. It makes it very accessible without crowding your pockets or having to be held in your hands. It also makes it much harder to lose the item when it's hanging around your neck because you never take it off. Another use of the lanyard is to have it hanging from the belt loop. This is good for waiters and waitresses that have to swipe cards to log into a computer system. That way it is not super visible and is more easily accessible to the hands without having to stoop over.
